When the time comes to submit your work for publication
this is what you need to do:
- Go through all your files and remove all fancy fonts, page breaks,
index markers and fonts. It is not essential but we would prefer the files in
12 point, Times Roman font.
- Make a list of page or chapter references (if any), as these will have to
be entered when the book has been paginated. For a
non-fiction work you might have to use a proof copy of the book to
finalise any page references. (The moral is 'avoid them if you can'.)
- Take out any diagrams, pictures or illustrations. You need to give
these a logical, sequential file-name such as figure 1,2, 3 etc. Mark
the place where the illustration goes by inserting the file-name and
the caption for the figure. Make a copy of the caption, as it is normal
to list these on the preliminary pages.
- Check the details page to make sure you have prepared all the
material you need, such as your 'blurb', dedications, index etc.
- If you have prepared your book with separate files for each chapter,
you now need to gather them into one big file. Open a new file and
import each file in turn.
- Gather all the different files you need into one, preferably new,
directory.
- You can now send the files. It makes a lot of sense to zip the them,
as this makes them quicker and easier to send and you have a compact
archive.

A few things to check:
 | Make sure you are sending the most up-to-date versions of your
files. |
 | Check that the chapter titles you have used in the text match
those in your list of chapters (the designer will add the page numbers
later). |
 | Ensure that you have checked the details. It is a tiring business but it
is not uncommon to find copy editing and other mistakes in the later
chapters. |
 | Every book craves an editor and needs a copy editor. If you can't
afford to hire one, get a friend
to help you by reading through your manuscript before sending it. |
